Cut The Stem

To keep the flowers fresh, cut the stem as soon as you arrive home. Flowers have a vascular system in their stems that pulls in water and nutrients to nourish the blooms. If the stems are not clipped, the air pulled into them while they are out of the water can prevent water absorption. So, take sharp scissors or pruning shears and trim at least a half inch off the bottom of the stem.

Place Them in Water Immediately

To speed up the procedure, cut the stems under water to prevent air bubbles from accumulating inside the stems. It is OK to place the flowers in a vase of water immediately after cutting.

Monitor the Water Temperature

Most flowers simply require room temperature tap water. There are a couple exceptions. Spring flowers, such as tulips & daffodils love freezing water! By adding ice cubes to the water a couple times, a day (and changing the water every 2 days) you will be pleasantly surprised at how long these beauties will last!

Hydrangeas are a different story. When we first process them, we put them in boiling water (the hottest tap water will suffice), adding a tablespoon of alum & a drop of bleach, spray the blooms with a waxy hydration and smash the bottom 2 inches of the stem with a hammer. These gorgeous girls require a ton of water and the barely stems get in the way. Our hydrangeas last extra-long with these steps! Just like magic!

Remove Below-Water Foliage

Any plant leaves or flowers that float around in the vase water will rot quickly and spread bacteria, killing your flowers before they bloom. Make sure to remove any greenery as soon as possible to avoid this.

Change the water to avoid bacteria, which can cause blossom death. Make sure to wash and refill the vase every three days. When trimming the stems, make sure to remove at least another half-inch to keep the water absorption fresh.
